THE LUXURIOUS VAMIZI ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE

Vamizi Island is absolutely idyllic. It is incredibly remote and unspoilt and the lodge has been painstakingly researched and built to have minimum impact. The lodge is one of the top island lodges to stay in Africa.

Vamizi is a twelve-kilometre island in the far North of Cabo Delgado, not far from the Tanzanian border. It is an idyllic tropical island with lush vegetation and white sandy beaches.
Offshore, the island is surrounded by extensive coral reefs. On the northern tip of Vamizi there is a lighthouse dating from the nineteenth century. At the opposite end there is a small village of transient fishermen and an established village of about 600 people. For centuries the people of Vamizi have farmed, fished and become known for the cloth they wove - a deep blue colour made from indigo cultivated on the island.

On one side of Vamizi there is an eight kilometre beach known as Perinet. The beach has a number of coral outcrops, in between which there is the purest white sand littered with shells. At the back of this beach Vamizi Island Lodge has 13 luxury chalets, tucked into the vegetation. Each chalet is set about 20 yards back from the beach and looks towards the sea. The chalets are spacious and beautiful and have a living area with comfortable sofas and chairs, a bedroom with king-sized bed and bathroom with twin basins and shower.

The décor is very stylish, every touch thought of and rooms the ultimate in barefoot luxury. In the centre of the lodge there is a bar and dining area, though often your meals will be eaten on a remote beach or under the stars. The excellent food focuses on seafood cooked in a traditional Mozambican style. Lobster, crab and shellfish are often on the menu, as well as any fish that have been caught that day.

Activities at Vamizi are low key and relaxed. Surrounded by extensive reef systems activities focus on snorkelling, diving and swimming. There are trails across the island which you can enjoy on foot or by bicycle and it is possible to take a boat trip into the mangroves or to another beach for a private picnic lunch.
